Dental Implants are regarded as the “gold standard” in terms of replacing missing teeth.
Often the alternatives, such as a partial denture, can be uncomfortable and take time to get used to wearing. Where as once the implant is fully integrated and the crown is placed often people notice very little difference to their existing teeth.
There are a few stages to having dental implants placed.
Firstly a consultation is done to ensure that the patient is ideally suited to having an implant. Some conditions that lead to bone loss and some medications could mean that an implant isn’t an ideal solution.
Once all of the planning is done after the consultation we move on to surgically placing the implant fixture in to the jaw bone. This is essentially a metal “root” which then integrates in to the surrounding bone to hold the crown in place.
A healing cap will then be placed over the implant fixture while it integrates in to the bone, often around 3 months
Once we are happy that the implant has completely integrated we will then move on to placing the crown and abutment on. The crown is the artificial tooth, and it is connected to the implant fixture by the abutment.
Often in cases where there is multiple teeth missing we can look to place a bridge, using implants to hold it in place.
Implant retained dentures can be a good solution for those who struggle to get used to wearing full dentures.
Again not all patients will be ideally suited to dental implants.
This is a fairly complex procedure. Therefore in most cases it will be recommended to be referred through to a specialist dentist, such as a prosthodontist
